6 Things That Rock About Being a Dad

On a long car ride back from skiing this weekend, two good friends and I got to talking about what we most enjoy about being dads – things big and small. In no particular order, here are six of the things we landed on that we most relish about being … Dad.

Broadening your horizons. If you approach life willing to experience new adventures, having kids is a great way to do it. While we hope our kids will adopt some of our interests, their varied personalities mean that they will have interests of their own that we’d otherwise never be exposed to.

Some of this year’s Super Bowl commercials that most stood out to me included an amusing spot where a boy gets a pig to fly … a poignant ad where a puppy dog comes home after a hard-fought journey … and a clever spot with Today Show hosts from two decades ago reminding us just how far technology has come in 21 years.

But what struck me most of all were three spots that very specifically, intentionally celebrated the unique and important role of fathers.

On January 1st, I stayed up past midnight to ring in the New Year. And I’ve been ringing in the New Year non-stop ever since. Matter of fact, I was ringing in the five weeks leading up to 2015 as well.

Beginning in late November my ears starting ringing. And they haven’t stopped for a break since. Doctors call it tinnitus, which I suspect is a fancy Latin word for “incessant, high-pitched tone.” Apparently, about 10% of Americans have it in some form.
